Black and White Spots, Dog Portrait, Fundraiser for Horses, Vernita Hoyt Artist

Black and White Spots!

Are you seeing spots before your eyes? This quick pastel demo sketch was completed as I painted in front of the gallery. People stopped and watched for a few minutes. A few sat and watched for the length of my session at the easel. This 12 x 9 inch pastel drawing is available for less than $100 at The DaVinci Artists Gallery now through December 2015. Artist profits from the framed piece will be donated to True Blue Animal Rescue located near Chappell Hill and Brenham, Texas. True Blue is raising funds to help rescued horses, and this framed pastel drawing will help the horses. Thank you if you can make this donation possible! You get the original pastel artwork, and the profits help the horses rescued by True Blue Animal Rescue. To donate directly to the fundraiser, click here.

The boxer dog enjoys the cooler mornings but easily overheats in the higher heat and humidity of afternoon. He is childlike. When he is inside, he wants to go out. When he is outside, he wants to come in the house.

I have shown the 6x4 inch sketchbook art matted to fit a 10x8 inch frame. Thank you for viewing my paintings. View my personal blog for price and availability of this painting.

Dalmatian Dogs have Unique Spot Patterns …

Did you know that each Dalmatian has a unique spot pattern … like a finger print? There is no making up the spots. If you want the dog to be recognized, you have to get those spots in the right places along with the usual features in the face—the look in the eyes, the placement of the nose, the whiskers, the shape of the mouth, the size of the ears, etc. Yes, I am having fun painting the Dalmatian portraits.

Whimsical Boxer Puppy in Graduation Cap by Vernita Hoyt

Puppy School Graduate

Whimsical Sketchbook Art © Vernita Bridges Hoyt 2015

Boxer Series #1: Puppy School Grad
Daily sketching or drawing is known to improve an artist's skills. Over the past several years I had fallen away from daily sketching, but recently I picked up the sketchbook again. What better place to start than with an ink line sketch of the boxer pup. Sketching has begun. Where will it take me? Thor was not happy at all wearing the graduation cap for his puppy school grad picture, but he was (and is) such a good boy that he wore the cap for a minute or two, long enough for pictures. I used a photo reference for the freehand sketch of Thor puppy and applied a little artistic license to make the his brown eyes blue. This is the first sketch of many to come from my newly revived daily sketch routine.

Turnips and Garden Greens oil painting by Vernita Bridges Hoyt

Turnips and Greens Still Life Oil Painting

Turnip Greens conjure memories from my past on the farm. Mother always had a garden and made sure she had vegetables of all kinds available for us three children to eat. I credit my mother with teaching me to like fresh vegetables. Good memories! In my mind I can see Mom working in the garden.

Textured Oil Painting of Sky and Trees by Texas artist Vernita Bridges Hoyt

AFTER THE STORM

Recent storms energized me. Last night I painted with a palette knife to show the changing of our skies after the storms passed over.  Sometimes a storm is just what I need to get me back into the studio.

You will find this painting with a link to purchase on my personal blog Texas Sauce Art Life Wednesday morning. You'll probably also find me rambling about storms and life in general.

Painting of an Old Border Collie who was Young at Heart

110429
Border Collie "Young at Heart"
3.5x2.5 inch mini art card illustration

Looking back through some earlier paintings, I came across this watercolor illustration of the late border collie Brooke. She was a sweet dog and loyal to the end. She came to me at 8 years and left to cross the Rainbow Bridge at 14 years. We knew each other for only six years, but it seemed like we had always been together.

Yes, I think Sunflower Solo is about ready to try her wings.

This might be my last sunflower of the season before I move on to other subjects.

A couple of weeks ago, I found a beautiful frame at Jerry's Artarama, a frame that would be so beautiful on this painting … if the molding was deep enough to hold the canvas.  It is not.  One day this week I will be headed back to Jerry's for another frame, hopefully a frame in the same style and color of the one I liked so much.

Thank you for viewing!

Sunflower Work in Progress. Shades of Gray.

SUNFLOWER SOLO work in progress oil painting on linen 12x9 inches
Grayscale does it! I convert a work-in-progress to digital grayscale to check values. The grayscale image shows me where I need to make adjustments. Currently, I have a sunflower on the easel while a pet portrait dries enough for the next glaze of oil paint. Trust your own instinct.

Painting of Border Collie Valentine

Valentines' Day Memory of Miss Brooke

What could be sweeter for Valentines' Day than a memory of Border Collie Brooke all decked out in a bright red hat?

The beautiful Miss Brooke departed and crossed over the rainbow bridge at age 14 after teaching Thor Boxer pup everything she knew about guarding the home and gardens and protecting her master … namely me. However, Thor did not excel in the lesson of how to be a studio dog. Miss Brooke loved relaxing in the studio at the foot of the easel as I painted. Thor has never been keen about lying by the easel, but he earned an A+ in all his other classes.

A New Home for Border Collie Brooke

I suppose you could call Miss Brooke a rescued dog. I picked her up from a family who no longer wanted her. The story was they were moving to a new house and would have no room for Brooke in the new house, but the truth of the matter was primarily that they hadn't taken good care of the girl and she was stinky with sarcastic mange, mites and skin bacteria, as well as eaten up by fleas. Additionally, she had a bad case of heart worms. If Brooke stayed with her current family or was dropped off at a shelter, she didn't stand much of a chance. Fate intervened when True Blue Animal Rescue in Brenham called me to the rescue.

Friend Betty and I drove to Pasadena, Texas, to meet Brooke. She met us at the door, well trained and polite, and sat patiently waiting for a pat, and she practically beat us out the door to the Jeep. Brooke instinctively knew she was going for a better ride. The only person in that house that she told goodbye was the father. She never even tried to say goodbye to the mother or either of the young children. She never feared Betty or I, and jumped into the back of the Jeep.  She was so stinky, we had to drive home with all the windows open for the circulation of fresh air blowing through the Jeep. After Brooke came to live with me and (long story short) was cured of all her ills, she was very protective and not so friendly and welcoming of strangers, although she did always love Ms. Betty.

I have thought back on the initial meeting between Miss Brooke and I, and I decided that surely it was God who brought us together. Brooke needed a new home and some healing care, and unknown to me at the time, I would soon need a caring friend and companion of my own. If you take care of your dogs, they will take care of you.

A Border Collie Red Hat Valentine

Miss Brooke became my Red Hat Valentine.  That said, I wish you a Happy Valentines' Day! May you have love and companionship and a caring friend in your life!

Another image from my archives, this painting of a Red Hat Doxie paid homage to my earlier passage into the Red Hat Society and was sold to benefit Dachshund Rescue.

Looking Back in order to Go Forward

Again, this was a daily painting, small at 8x6 inches and painted quickly. Looking back, I realize that I like the freshness of those fast daily paintings. Painting quickly forced me to leave out unnecessary detail and paint my impression of the subject.

Sometimes it is good to look back in order to go forward.

Oil Painting of Pretty Dog Named Prissy

PRISSY
oil on canvas panel
copyright V. Bridges Hoyt 2009

I came across this painting as I was cleaning out some image files. This was painted in 2009 when I was into completion of a painting a day. At the time I was turning out paintings at a fast pace and I barely had time to look at and critique a painting before it was listed and sold. When I stumbled across the painting of Prissy, I smiled. The painting was much prettier than I remembered it. Sometimes we need to slow down and observe what we are doing, not hurry the paintings out the door. I would have enjoyed having Prissy hanging on my own gallery wall for a few months, but the painting of Prissy went to a good home in Kansas, and for that I am glad.
