Turnip Greens conjure memories from my past on the farm. Mother always had a garden and made sure she had vegetables of all kinds available for us three children to eat. I credit my mother with teaching me to like fresh vegetables. Good memories! In my mind I can see Mom working in the garden.

Into each life some rain must fall, it is said. I say that we each need to find our sunshine, and I find mine in painting sunflowers through the cold, damp winter months of southeast Texas.

When I need a warm up to help me into a different medium, I can always count on a tree or few to do the job.

Over the weekend, I did several sketches in ink line with a watercolor wash. Primary colors call to me, this time blue and yellow. The beauty of a sketchbook is that I can paint whatever I want with whatever colors I want to use. Nothing has to be realistic.

I like the simplicity of this piece. With the right mat and frame … 

After the warmup, I proceeded to a commissioned  artwork.

Cowboy Doxie was painted and sold in 2007. Cowboy was one of a dachshund trio. The other two paintings were titled Santa Babe Dachshund and Wet Paint Doxie. All three paintings of the trio found homes.

HURRICANE IKE September 13, 2008: Hurricane Ike was the category 4 storm that convinced the population of Galveston that the city still was not hurricane proof 108 years after the Turn of the Century Storm, although a seawall had been built and many other warning systems were in place.  THE 1900 STORM September 8, 1900: In the years before hurricanes were named, the Great Hurricane wiped out Galveston, Texas, and killed over 6,000 people. A few years back, I read Erik Larson's best seller book Isaac's Storm which is still available. I recommend you read this book if you haven't. The book is part historical documentation from the viewpoint of Isaac Cline the Galveston weatherman who tried to warn about the approaching storm and part historical fiction based on narratives told by survivors. I had always heard of the Turn of the Century Storm, but until I read Larson's book I never understood the depth of destruction to the Island and to the people living there. You will never view a hurricane in the same light after reading about The 1900 Storm. Click here to view more information about the Great Hurricane.

Texas Landscape, Wildfire, Miniature Oil Painting

From 15 November 2010 through 31 October 2011, Texas wildfires burned 3,959,040 acres of land and vegetation. During those 12 months Texas wildfires burned 2,862 homes and 2,700 other structures.  A whopping 47.3% of all acreage burned in the USA in 2011 was burned in Texas. (1)

Painted with a palette knife and oil paint, this daily painting is from my imagination and was inspired by the Texas drought and wildfires that burned in the summer of 2011. This original oil painting was created on Arches 140 lb. paper which has been mounted on an archival backer board for extra support. As soon as the oil paint has dried thoroughly, a glaze of Damar varnish will be applied for a uniform glossy finish.  My muse has returned after what seems like a long absence.  

Throughout history we find oil paintings that have been painted on paper, and I decided to do a series of small Texas landscapes on Arches professional grade paper. The beauty of this application of oils on paper is that it gives us options in how we can frame an oil painting. This small 4x4 inch size can be matted and framed under glass, as you would frame a watercolor painting, or the mini oil painting can be framed in the traditional way of framing directly into a miniature frame (unglazed).

This piece began with Sketch #1 of the 15 minute poses from the first live model figure drawing lab. When I stopped, all I had was a line drawing.

At home, I more than doubled the time and shaded the charcoal drawing, added linework with a Pigma Micron 3 pen, a little color with watercolor pencils over charcoal shading. What we have here is a mixed media drawing. I like that I could save the loose, casual feel of the drawing.

This model was relaxed and easily changed from one pose to the next.
