Rottweiler Dogs in Field of Texas Bluebonnets

Rotties in Texas Bluebonnets
watercolor 11x14 commissioned painting
© Vernita Bridges Hoyt 2014

This watercolor painting of Rottweiler dogs sitting in a field of bluebonnets was a commissioned painting to be used as a Christmas gift. I enjoyed painting this as it included so many of my favorite subjects, i.e. the dogs, the landscape, and the field of Texas bluebonnet wildflowers.

Brown Pelican at Smith Point on Galveston Bay

I have been busy painting commissioned works. This was the first and only one I can show until after Christmas. The pelican was tangled in a fishing line with a hook and line around its beak. My client's husband and son were able to calm the pelican and remove the hook and line and set the pelican free.

Blue Tree in Yellow Sunshine by Vernita Hoyt

Tree Study in Blue and Yellow
watercolor on sketchbook paper
copyright Vernita Bridges Hoyt

When I need a warm up to help me into a different medium, I can always count on a tree or few to do the job.

Over the weekend, I did several sketches in ink line with a watercolor wash. Primary colors call to me, this time blue and yellow. The beauty of a sketchbook is that I can paint whatever I want with whatever colors I want to use. Nothing has to be realistic.

I like the simplicity of this piece. With the right mat and frame …

After the warmup, I proceeded to a commissioned  artwork.

November: Lung Cancer Awareness Month

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. We all know people who have fought the battle with lung cancer. Many of us have lost loved ones to this war. The two sketches below are offered to benefit LungCancerAlliance. I will be listing these and more in the Etsy gallery shop soon. You will find a mini-gallery floating in the right hand side bar at Texas Sauce Art Life.

November 30 need not be the end of Lung Cancer Awareness. As we move forward into December and the new year 2015, let's do what we can to help find better treatments and/or a cure for lung cancer.

HURRICANE IKE September 13, 2008: Hurricane Ike was the category 4 storm that convinced the population of Galveston that the city still was not hurricane proof 108 years after the Turn of the Century Storm, although a seawall had been built and many other warning systems were in place. Click here to view the permanent Galveston shoreline changes made by Hurricane Ike. Click here to view the damages to Houston as reported by Centerpoint Energy.

THE 1900 STORM September 8, 1900: In the years before hurricanes were named, the Great Hurricane wiped out Galveston, Texas, and killed over 6,000 people. A few years back, I read Erik Larson's best seller book Isaac's Storm which is still available. I recommend you read this book if you haven't. The book is part historical documentation from the viewpoint of Isaac Cline the Galveston weatherman who tried to warn about the approaching storm and part historical fiction based on narratives told by survivors. I had always heard of the Turn of the Century Storm, but until I read Larson's book I never understood the depth of destruction to the Island and to the people living there. You will never view a hurricane in the same light after reading about The 1900 Storm. Click here to view more information about the Great Hurricane.

Texas Landscape, Wildfire, Miniature Oil Painting

To inquire about this piece, leave a comment or contact the artist directly at the link in this post. If all else fails, email txsauce@txsauce.net and your inquiry will be forwarded to the artist.

From 15 November 2010 through 31 October 2011, Texas wildfires burned 3,959,040 acres of land and vegetation. During those 12 months Texas wildfires burned 2,862 homes and 2,700 other structures.  A whopping 47.3% of all acreage burned in the USA in 2011 was burned in Texas. (1)

Texas Landscape #1: Wildfire
oil on paper, 4x4 inches
Click on image to view detail and description.
Painted with a palette knife and oil paint, this daily painting is from my imagination and was inspired by the Texas drought and wildfires that burned in the summer of 2011. This original oil painting was created on Arches 140 lb. paper which has been mounted on an archival backer board for extra support. As soon as the oil paint has dried thoroughly, a glaze of Damar varnish will be applied for a uniform glossy finish.  My muse has returned after what seems like a long absence.

Throughout history we find oil paintings that have been painted on paper, and I decided to do a series of small Texas landscapes on Arches professional grade paper. The beauty of this application of oils on paper is that it gives us options in how we can frame an oil painting. This small 4x4 inch size can be matted and framed under glass, as you would frame a watercolor painting, or the mini oil painting can be framed in the traditional way of framing directly into a miniature frame (unglazed).

Live Sketch of Woman Standing

To inquire about this piece, leave a comment or contact the artist directly at the link in this post. If all else fails, email txsauce@txsauce.net and your inquiry will be forwarded to the artist.

This piece began with Sketch #1 of the 15 minute poses from the first live model figure drawing lab. When I stopped, all I had was a line drawing.

original 30-minute Sketch #1 of Live Model,
mixed media of charcoal, Pigma Micron ink pen, Conte pastel pencil, watercolor pencil,
on Bristol Plate 2-ply paper, 12x9 inches
0050.
At home, I more than doubled the time and shaded the charcoal drawing, added linework with a Pigma Micron 3 pen, a little color with watercolor pencils over charcoal shading. What we have here is a mixed media drawing. I like that I could save the loose, casual feel of the drawing.

This model was relaxed and easily changed from one pose to the next.

To inquire about this piece, leave a comment or contact the artist directly at the link in this post. If all else fails, email txsauce@txsauce.net and your inquiry will be forwarded to the artist.

Figure Sketches #6, #4, and #5 (left to right) of the previous model:

Composite of Three 15 Minute Sketches #6, #4, and #5,
#5 and #6 are graphite pencil,
#4 in the center is mixed media of charcoal, Conte pastel pencil, and Pigma Brush pen.
Each pose was sketched on a separate 12x9 inch sheet of Bristol Plate 2-ply paper.

I assembled this composite layout digitally. I like it. In reality each pose is sketched on its own individual sheet of 12x9 inch paper. You will find the individual originals in the sidebar of my blog or at TXsauceStudio.Etsy.com/

Another live model figure sketch of Josianne, completed in 15 minutes:

15 Minute Sketch #2 of Live Model
pastel pencil on Bristol Plate 2-ply paper
12 L x 9 W inches
0025.

This is actually sketch #2 in the order completed. I like the purple and dark brown coloration of this one and the simplicity of focus on the figure, not the dress. The legs of the stool are sketched in lightly to connect the figure to the floor. I positioned this figure to the right of the paper to emphasize the model's gaze. What is she looking at?

Suggested mat color: dark umber (brown) to relate to colors used in the sketch.

Figure Sketch of Live Model
pencil and ink on Bristol Plate 2 Ply paper
11 L x 9 W inches

Last week I attended a live model figurative lab, first time I've done that in years. I came away inspired! All drawings were in 5 minute or 15 minute time spans. The image below is one of my 15 minute sketches. The model sat on a stool and leaned forward with her chin slightly tilted upward, eyes down. This pose created some foreshortening in the face arms and legs. Her left leg (on our right) was partially covered by fabric. I didn't bother to render the stool since my focus was on the figure. Great fun!

Cattle Off the Beaten Path in East Texas Piney Woods, Pastel Art

My trademark phrase, "I paint the sauce of Texas" refers to scenes like the one in this painting. In my eyes, this is the sauce of Texas. Riding through the pasture counting cows with Dad, I snapped photos as he drove, photos for painting reference. More such paintings to come, you can be sure.

In the meantime, here is an older pet portrait painted as a commissioned piece in 2009. This oil painting of Winston captured the essence of the breed. Somewhere under that mop of fur, Winston had open eyes. They were hard to find. Winston was a lovable soul and a fun dog to paint.

This is one of those paintings from my imagination, the "Out of my Head" series. My mother always had a veggie garden, and I remember digging turnips out of the ground when I was a child. I had a lot of fun painting this in 2009. This painting has been stored in my archives and is as good as new, actually better than new since the paint has had time to cure and can now be varnished to add that high sheen, if desired.

The Road Ahead

watercolor on paper, Arches 140 lb. cp
11 x 14 inches

My paintings nearly always show an event or a day from my life.

On our last drive through the pasture to look at cows, Dad wanted to drive through the woods to the back side of the farm. We did. What appears to be a curve in the road ahead is actually a small pond. The road curves left, then right, and narrows as it crosses the dam of the pond. Dad chuckled as I maneuvered the Jeep across that narrow dam. Good memories.

This casual wash and line painting of Henry was painted to generate a donation to Legacy Boxer Rescue in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas. The funds will be donated to Legacy Boxer Rescue as soon as the payment of $45 arrives in the mail, at which time the painting will ship to its new home.

For my ART HELPING BOXERS fundraiser, I offered pet portraits for half my typical commission fee in hopes that the paintings will sell quickly thereby generating funds to help ownerless Boxer dogs. The deadline for requesting a portrait in this fundraiser was December 2013. There were so many requests, I am still painting from the request list. All fundraiser proceeds (less shipping costs) are donated to help a Boxer rescue organization.

Sketch: Table and Two Chairs

From my sketchbook, a contour line drawing study of a table and two chairs.  I would love to do more of these and need to get back to my sketchbook.

copyright Vernita Bridges Hoyt 2012

A sketchbook can be a journal of one's daily progress in art. When I take the time to sketch daily, I find a consistent improvement in my drawing skills. The time spent sketching relaxes and inspires my mind simultaneously. When I reach that zen-like zone, my hand seems to move of its own free will without any control from me. What a wonderful feeling! The zone of meditation comes easily when I am focused on the subject at hand.
