Last week I attended a live model figurative lab, first time I've done that in years. I came away inspired! All drawings were in 5 minute or 15 minute time spans. The image below is one of my 15 minute sketches. The model sat on a stool and leaned forward with her chin slightly tilted upward, eyes down. This pose created some foreshortening in the face arms and legs. Her left leg (on our right) was partially covered by fabric. I didn't bother to render the stool since my focus was on the figure. Great fun!

Cattle Off the Beaten Path in East Texas Piney Woods, Pastel Art

My trademark phrase, "I paint the sauce of Texas" refers to scenes like the one in this painting. In my eyes, this is the sauce of Texas. Riding through the pasture counting cows with Dad, I snapped photos as he drove, photos for painting reference. More such paintings to come, you can be sure.

This is one of those paintings from my imagination, the "Out of my Head" series. My mother always had a veggie garden, and I remember digging turnips out of the ground when I was a child. I had a lot of fun painting this in 2009. This painting has been stored in my archives and is as good as new, actually better than new since the paint has had time to cure and can now be varnished to add that high sheen, if desired.

My paintings nearly always show an event or a day from my life. 

On our last drive through the pasture to look at cows, Dad wanted to drive through the woods to the back side of the farm. We did. What appears to be a curve in the road ahead is actually a small pond. The road curves left, then right, and narrows as it crosses the dam of the pond. Dad chuckled as I maneuvered the Jeep across that narrow dam. Good memories.

This Maine Coon cat had good taste in floral arrangements and loved to cuddle up on the table next to flowers. This quick piece was sketched from life. I worked quickly since I had no idea if the cat would stay or move.

This casual wash and line painting of Henry was painted to generate a donation to Legacy Boxer Rescue in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area of Texas. Henry's mom-woman has seen the painting and wants to purchase it. The funds will be donated to Legacy Boxer Rescue as soon as the payment of $45 arrives in the mail, at which time the painting will ship to its new home.

For my ART HELPING BOXERS fundraiser, I offered pet portraits for half my typical commission fee in hopes that the paintings will sell quickly thereby generating funds to help ownerless Boxer dogs. The deadline for requesting a portrait in this fundraiser was December 2013. There were so many requests, I am still painting from the request list. All fundraiser proceeds (less shipping costs) are donated to help a Boxer rescue organization.

A sketchbook can be a journal of one's daily progress in art. When I take the time to sketch daily, I find a consistent improvement in my drawing skills. The time spent sketching relaxes and inspires my mind simultaneously. When I reach that zen-like zone, my hand seems to move of its own free will without any control from me. What a wonderful feeling! The zone of meditation comes easily when I am focused on the subject at hand.

The Graduate, colored pencil boxer pup

This is my Thor boxer boy when he was about six months old. He had just graduated from his first training class. I worked on this piece off and on for a couple of years. Finally finished, but think I will do another one in oil paint without the blue background panels.
