Fresh and Loose, by Leada Wood

This is what was on my gator board today. I wanted to sketch a blue hydrangea with watercolor pencils and then paint as loosely as I could without overworking it and adding too much detail.

I use a possum palette from Cheap Joes, and it keeps my paints nice and juicy. Sometimes I do add a little water, but they never dry up and crack like some palettes I have used. There are individual cups with lids for your paints. I also enjoy the three separate mixing wells, and it has a carrying sleeve that the whole palette fits into. Makes traveling with that palette a whole lot easier. Sweet!

Here is a close up. I just let the color mingle and mix on the paper...and let the paint do its magic.

Here is the final version...fresh transparent watercolor. Still in love with them after all these years!
 Have a great weekend!

First Class in New Studio-Suzy Pal Powell

Friday we had our first class in the new building. Half of the students were either sick or gone, so our class was small but we had a lot of fun.
We painted a small still life of a quilt I made years ago. The pattern is the 'Fan' Quilt.   I love to paint fabric designs, etc. I finished just part of mine and cropped it down.  I now give away my demos, (we draw names) and Carol won this one!
I hope she enjoys it!

Figure Sketches of Woman, 3 in 1, Graphite and Pastel Pencil

Figure Sketches #6, #4, and #5 (left to right) of the previous model:

Composite of Three 15 Minute Sketches #6, #4, and #5,
#5 and #6 are graphite pencil,
#4 in the center is mixed media of charcoal, Conte pastel pencil, and Pigma Brush pen.
Each pose was sketched on a separate 12x9 inch sheet of Bristol Plate 2-ply paper.

I assembled this composite layout digitally. I like it. In reality each pose is sketched on its own individual sheet of 12x9 inch paper. You will find the individual originals in the sidebar of my blog or at TXsauceStudio.Etsy.com/

I was reading an article by Kathie George on batik watercolors. Although I have been doing batik watercolor for a long time her technique was a little different from mine so I thought I would give it a go. I used my mixture of batik wax instead of paffarin like she suggested. I did enjoy using brushes instead of the batik tools I normally use. The scariest part of all, in both techniques is at the end when you wad your rice paper into a ball. Sometimes holes occur so one must proceed with caution and practice. I also have done batik  with  acrylic paint and that's another whole ball of wax!
Have a great weekend!

Breckenridge 23rd Annual Juried Show, Breckenridge TX

I found out today that I had 2 collages accepted in Breckenridge Art Show, in Breckenridge,TX.
I entered the 'Wyoming Cowboy' and 'Elegance is an Attitude'.
I wasn't sure they would accept that type of collage so I wrote to them, and the show chairman said she had not seen any like it, but yes they would accept them.  I entered 2 and both got in! There was 289 entries and they picked 125. I would love to go to the show, but will be tied up here in Plains with our show here.
The Judge is Scott Meyers.  He is also a vet. I googled his work and it is really beautiful!

Live Model Figure Sketch in Pastel Pencil

Another live model figure sketch of Josianne, completed in 15 minutes:

15 Minute Sketch #2 of Live Model
pastel pencil on Bristol Plate 2-ply paper
12 L x 9 W inches
0025.

This is actually sketch #2 in the order completed. I like the purple and dark brown coloration of this one and the simplicity of focus on the figure, not the dress. The legs of the stool are sketched in lightly to connect the figure to the floor. I positioned this figure to the right of the paper to emphasize the model's gaze. What is she looking at?

Suggested mat color: dark umber (brown) to relate to colors used in the sketch.

Colorful Live Model Figure Sketch

Figure Sketch of Live Model
pencil and ink on Bristol Plate 2 Ply paper
11 L x 9 W inches

Last week I attended a live model figurative lab, first time I've done that in years. I came away inspired! All drawings were in 5 minute or 15 minute time spans. The image below is one of my 15 minute sketches. The model sat on a stool and leaned forward with her chin slightly tilted upward, eyes down. This pose created some foreshortening in the face arms and legs. Her left leg (on our right) was partially covered by fabric. I didn't bother to render the stool since my focus was on the figure. Great fun!

Cattle Off the Beaten Path in East Texas Piney Woods, Pastel Art

My trademark phrase, "I paint the sauce of Texas" refers to scenes like the one in this painting. In my eyes, this is the sauce of Texas. Riding through the pasture counting cows with Dad, I snapped photos as he drove, photos for painting reference. More such paintings to come, you can be sure.
