HURRICANE IKE
September 13, 2008: Hurricane Ike was the category 4 storm that convinced the population of Galveston that the city still was not hurricane proof 108 years after the Turn of the Century Storm, although a seawall had been built and many other warning systems were in place. Click

THE 1900 STORM
September 8, 1900: In the years before hurricanes were named, the Great Hurricane wiped out Galveston, Texas, and killed over 6,000 people. A few years back, I read Erik Larson's best seller book
Isaac's Storm which is still available. I recommend you read this book if you haven't. The book is part historical documentation from the viewpoint of Isaac Cline the Galveston weatherman who tried to warn about the approaching storm and part historical fiction based on narratives told by survivors. I had always heard of the Turn of the Century Storm, but until I read Larson's book I never understood the depth of destruction to the Island and to the people living there. You will never view a hurricane in the same light after reading about The 1900 Storm. Click
