Turquoise Parrot

"Bird of a Different Color"
7"x 5"
Acrylic on canvas board

This is the painting that resulted from the sketch I posted recently. It is my first attempt at acrylics and I just relaxed and had fun. The title refers to the fact that this is a Blue Macaw, from a photo I took at the Abilene Zoo. I took some artistic license and changed it to a Turquoise Macaw because our local art league has a category in their upcoming show- mini paintings with turquoise making up no less than 75%. They wanted turquoise, I gave them turquoise! I turned the parrot turquoise as well as the background and had a ball doing it. If the painting turned out, great, if it didn't I learned a lot about acrylics and had some fun. I decided to go ahead and enter it, only cost $5 to do so. We shall see what the judge thinks! I did enter two other "normal" sized drawings in the main part of the show too.

The boxer dog enjoys the cooler mornings but easily overheats in the higher heat and humidity of afternoon. He is childlike. When he is inside, he wants to go out. When he is outside, he wants to come in the house.

I have shown the 6x4 inch sketchbook art matted to fit a 10x8 inch frame. Thank you for viewing my paintings. View my personal blog for price and availability of this painting.

"The Boxer Pup" includes an 8x10 inch white mat (shown).

Recently, I have been painting Dalmatian pet portraits. Oh boy! Have I had fun painting all those spots! Spots are much more than black and white.

Dalmatian Dogs have Unique Spot Patterns …

Did you know that each Dalmatian has a unique spot pattern … like a finger print? There is no making up the spots. If you want the dog to be recognized, you have to get those spots in the right places along with the usual features in the face—the look in the eyes, the placement of the nose, the whiskers, the shape of the mouth, the size of the ears, etc. Yes, I am having fun painting the Dalmatian portraits.

Parrot Sketch

Parrot Sketch
7" x 5"
Graphite on paper

On a recent trip to the Abilene, Texas zoo, I took photographs of their parrots and made a sketch, using one of the photos as reference. The colors are brilliant blue and yellow-gold. My plan is to make a small acrylic painting of this bird and use a bit of artistic license with the colors. Our local art show is having its yearly open show soon and one category is mini-art. When our group has a mini category, a color is assigned and the work must be predominantly that color. This year it is turquoise, which isn't too far off from the color of the parrot, so I decided to try painting this one turquoise and add turquoise to the background as well. This will be my first work done in acrylics and I have been spending time playing with them on a canvas pad. This piece may never work out in acrylic, but it will be a fun experiment and I should learn a lot about how to handle the medium. If it works out, I will be sure and post the finished painting.

Whimsical Boxer Puppy in Graduation Cap by Vernita Hoyt

Puppy School Graduate

Whimsical Sketchbook Art © Vernita Bridges Hoyt 2015

Boxer Series #1: Puppy School Grad
Daily sketching or drawing is known to improve an artist's skills. Over the past several years I had fallen away from daily sketching, but recently I picked up the sketchbook again. What better place to start than with an ink line sketch of the boxer pup. Sketching has begun. Where will it take me? Thor was not happy at all wearing the graduation cap for his puppy school grad picture, but he was (and is) such a good boy that he wore the cap for a minute or two, long enough for pictures. I used a photo reference for the freehand sketch of Thor puppy and applied a little artistic license to make the his brown eyes blue. This is the first sketch of many to come from my newly revived daily sketch routine.

Boxer Puppy School Grad, wc & ink on 100 lb. paper 8x5 in.
