Blue Tree in Yellow Sunshine by Vernita Hoyt

Tree Study in Blue and Yellow
watercolor on sketchbook paper
copyright Vernita Bridges Hoyt

When I need a warm up to help me into a different medium, I can always count on a tree or few to do the job.

Over the weekend, I did several sketches in ink line with a watercolor wash. Primary colors call to me, this time blue and yellow. The beauty of a sketchbook is that I can paint whatever I want with whatever colors I want to use. Nothing has to be realistic.

I like the simplicity of this piece. With the right mat and frame …

After the warmup, I proceeded to a commissioned  artwork.

I did this drawing from a photo I found web site that offers photos for artist to use. I just loved the look in the eye of this Golden Eagle and had to draw it. A fellow art league member purchased it.

Fiddlin' Santa by Leada Wood

My dad was a fiddler, in fact he could play nearly any instrument. I come from a musical family and have many fond memories of the "Family Band" growing up.  Nearly every Sunday afternoon they would gather at someone's  house and play gospel and country music and all us kids would play. I can still hear the songs in my head...the family band is gone but not the sweet memories. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas full of fond memories, family and friends!

Fiddlin' Santa is not for sale but prints and cards are available.

Can't seem to get enough of sketching those chilies! Guess because they are so abundant right now at our house. The various colors just appeal to me.

The Piglet Sketch Art by Vernita Hoyt

Piglet. Sketchbook Art.

When my grandson was small he had a few Webkins. I think this little piglet was my favorite, so much so that I added Piglet to my sketchbook in 2008.

Curious Calves by Linda S. Wright

"Curiosity"
5" x 7"
Graphite and charcoal
Sold

This drawing was done from a photo I took of some curious calves, which my son and I saw on an early morning walk. They were behind a fence, which I removed for this drawing. As we walked down the road, they followed along, perhaps expecting food?  They may have wondered about my large black dog, who was on a leash walking with us.

Another peek into my sketchbook. Sketching in your sketchbook is very relaxing and hopefully will become a habit. Give it a try! It's only paper, paint and ink.
This sketch came into being after the harvest of our red chili peppers and I made relish out of them. So easy and soooo good! You can make it with green ones too.

Chili Pepper Relish

Fresh red chilies- chop in food processor
add 3 or 4 garlic cloves
1 tablespoon of salt
blend and put in a jar and cover with pickling vinegar

November: Lung Cancer Awareness Month

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. We all know people who have fought the battle with lung cancer. Many of us have lost loved ones to this war. The two sketches below are offered to benefit LungCancerAlliance. I will be listing these and more in the Etsy gallery shop soon. You will find a mini-gallery floating in the right hand side bar at Texas Sauce Art Life.
Postcard Sketches of Clematis Flower
November 30 need not be the end of Lung Cancer Awareness. As we move forward into December and the new year 2015, let's do what we can to help find better treatments and/or a cure for lung cancer.

As a child, I was reprimanded for daydreaming. Today my daydreams morph into paintings.

Deer Sketch by Linda S. Wright

Curious Does
Graphite sketch approx. 7" sq.

My husband and I live out in the country so deer are frequent visitors. These two does were in front of our house and curious about what I was doing. I hope to do a more finished drawing of this one of these days.

"Torched" 26x10 transparent watercolor by Debbie Cannatella

Torched
26"x10" transparent watercolor
by Debbie Cannatellla

I am still working on my commissions and doing a lot of traveling. But I squeezed in time a few weeks ago to paint this torch ginger. I did an entire floral series 7 years ago, but didn't want to be known as a flower painter so I backed off on painting these. But every now and then I need to bust out and paint one.  I just love nature, and as a nature painter, I can't nix the florals.

Colored Pencil Chickadee on Marble by Linda S. Wright

Chickadee on Marble
4"x 4"
Colored Pencil and white gel pen

My oldest son is an estimator for a large construction company. They recently got rid of a lot of their marble and tile samples. I took a few to see what I could do with them and tried this one with colored pencils and a white gel pen. I was pleasantly surprised that the colored pencil went on so well. It was fun and I plan to do more. One thing nice about a nice, thick piece (1") of marble, it sits up nicely on its own, no frame or special easel needed for display!
