Shadow Of The Moon, by Leada Wood

The Shadow Of The Moon is 22x28 acrylic on paper. I used a 3x3 skin that I was drawn to and in a landscape format. I then painted alla prima onto the paper in 8 minutes, no drawing and then spritzed the paper and let the paint work it's magic. This was a technique learned last week in Douglas Walton's workshop. The more untouched the painting the more soul and spirt it has. This painting was completely untouched except I added a small moon and halo to complete it. Most artist tend to overwork the painting creating muddy colors.  It was a fun workshop and we learned so many interesting techniques. It's a fun way to paint a landscape and you get very interesting effects every time. Some had to work really hard to get theirs to work. I was fortunate and had beginners luck!

I started out with an under painting, trying to come up with a lesson for my watercolor class.  We have been working on some under paintings, and as I got into this drawing with the pears, it just wasn't working for me. So...like I have done in the past, I just collaged it.  Even though it is on watercolor paper it still works out ok. I have done several like this.  I am working on a demo for Portales NM, and this one will work for what I am planning.  I am also having a workshop March 28-29, and there is still room for more if you are interested.

Although this painting sold immediately and was shipped to Madison, WI, I still wanted to post an image of it.  I do love avocados and it is something that came to me late in life.  My mom always loved them, but as I kid I avoided it like the plague.  Living in Corpus Christi, avocados are a staple in the diet and I eat them just like this... drizzle a high quality balsamic into the center and go for it with a spoon. I do believe I need to paint more of these!

We lucked out last night and had half way decent weather to drive to Portales.  It is 100 miles.  We saw a fire on the way, just inside NM. I didn't get a very good photo, but you can see what could burn! Most of the ranchers have sold their cattle, it is so dry here..heading into a 4 year drought.

The demo went ok I guess. There is no way you can do a collage in 30-45 mins. but you can explain how you work, etc.  This demo was taking failed watercolors and collaging them.  The music scene on the bottom corner was one of those. as well as the white flower I worked on. The music is below. It was just so blah and there didn't seem to be much I could do with it.  I think the collaged one worked out much better. Has more excitement.  I left some of the watercolor showing.  The bottom right is all watercolor, and some of the piano keys are left.

The Purple top left corner was collage/watercolor and one of the ladies bought it for her Granddaughter.  We had a fun night. Great Mexican food with a good friend then an hour of art!

I am investigating oil these days.  After 18 months of painting large watercolors for last November's solo exhibition, I am "water logged" and feeling to urge to explore.  This was my first foray into this medium in many years.

The summer that Keri and I got hung up in Memphis due to a weather delay, so we went down to Beale Street. We had Bar-b-q on the patio...THEN, we were scared to death by a zombie march! We had never seen anything like it! What a shock to be eating and all this start marching by. We went into some little shops and I found this wall hanging and took a photo of it.

I painted it a while ago and didn't like it so In preparation for a demo, I got it out, and collaged part of it.  I left the bottom below the instruments just watercolor and some of the piano keys. It will have to be framed because it is on watercolor paper. I will go ahead and put it under plexi too.

I am doing a demo in Portales NM Monday the 17th. If you are close, come for a visit!
I am teaching a 2 day workshop here in Plains March 28-29, if interested email me.

I was visiting the zoo last year... I don't even remember what city I was in, because I try to visit a zoo in whichever city I visit. This comparatively small Clouded Leopard captured my attention. She was resting above on a rock with her eyes closed, and every now and then would open them and, without moving another muscle, watch the people walking by, then close her eyes again. She was quite beautiful and it was hard to remind myself she wasn't at all like my domestic tuxedo cat, though her mannerisms mimicked mine succinctly..

Zebra Finches are so cute! I saw a  cage full in the pet store in Houston and sure wanted to bring them home. It has always been a dream of mine to have an aviary in the yard, maybe oriental in design filled with all kinds of cute little birds. For now I will just have fun observing birds and painting them.

Birds Of A Feather is 5x7 watercolor on archival paper and is part of my Feathered Friends Series.   Thanks for looking!

Lester

A couple of years ago, my son called and told me Lester  was coming to shoe his horses and mules, if I wanted pictures. So I grabbed my camera and took off. He is about 30 minutes away. When I got there he was already through and loaded up, and I was so disappointed, so he got his tools out, and posed for me! I took quite a few photos. I have known Lester for a long time, so he didn't seem to mind to help me out!
This is done on 300 pound hot press watercolor paper, using transparent watercolors as well as some gouache.  It will be 18x24 framed.

When I spent over 16 months painting for a recent solo exhibition, I was having a hard time getting down to the end of my schedule. I was tired of painting realistic wildlife paintings! I needed something to push me to the end, so I created a half-dozen of these fun, intuitive, whimsical landscape paintings, just to get me through... and they became the hit of the exhibition.

The Road Ahead
© Vernita Bridges Hoyt 2014
watercolor on paper, Arches 140 lb. cp
11 x 14 inches

My paintings nearly always show an event or a day from my life.

On our last drive through the pasture to look at cows, Dad wanted to drive through the woods to the back side of the farm. We did. What appears to be a curve in the road ahead is actually a small pond. The road curves left, then right, and narrows as it crosses the dam of the pond. Dad chuckled as I maneuvered the Jeep across that narrow dam. Good memories.

Moonlight On The Mesa by Leada Wood

Moonlight On The Mesa is an experimental painting using Faux Encaustics. You use acrylic paint and mediums instead of hot wax. I am enjoying the technique and will probably continue playing around with it. This one turned out to look like the moon peaking over the mesa and casting its glow across the land. This one is an 8x8 mixed media collage.
